Lakeside Wrestling ~The Road To State~

Well, yet another flippin roller coaster ride of a wrestling week!  You know it’s not so much the winning or losing of a match that eats away at your stomach; it’s the stink’n anxiety leading up to it.  Oh, don’t get me wrong, I get a little angry when one of our wrestlers lose and I tend to show that outwardly, but the anxiety is a whole different monster.  Anyhow, back to the team.  Your team entered the regional tournament at Freeman High school with 11 expected wrestlers and we received a bonus when Ben McConnell entered at 152 lbs, unexpectedly.  Apparently, there was an opening and Ben was in the right place at the right time.  A Chewelah wrestler did not show up to the tournament (unsure of the reason why) which opened a spot for the 152 lb. alternate.  The alternates from both districts were not present, so Ben was next in line being the 7th placer from our district.  Ben was there to watch and support our team, not planning to wrestle.  When asked to weigh-in, he stepped on the scale and was exactly on weight.  Next, he had to come up with the necessary items to wear, as he brought none of his own gear.  Thanks to Colton Talbott, who was there and ready as an alternate, Ben fit his singlet and shoe size perfectly.  This all had to be a God Thing!  Ben got the priceless experience of competing at yet another level of post-season wrestling.
Fifteen teams were competing in an 8 man bracket with the top 4 moving on to State competition.  Out of our 12 wrestlers, 9 of your team members are going to State.  Just a reminder, if they win their first 2 matches they are propelled into the Championship finals; if they lose one of the first 2, they have an uphill battle to get to the 3rd and 4th place match.  Here are the results:
106 lbs Jesse Woll went 0 and 2, but always competed hard and enjoyed the moment.
106 lbs Joe Adams won his first 2 and would be wrestling in the Championship match.
113 lbs Noah Ircink went 0 and 2, and also competed hard.
113 lbs Dalton Young won his first 2 and would wrestle in the Championship match.
120 lbs Cole Ahrendt went 3 and 1 and placed 3rd, great job from the silent warrior!
126 lbs Hootie Judd won his first 2 and moved to the championship match.
132 lbs Klint Brown won his first 2 and would wrestle in the finals.
138 lbs Garrett Brown won his first 2, (2nd match was once again a nail-biter and went into quadruple overtime to decide the winner!)
152 lbs Ben McConnell went 0 and 2 and greatly contributed to the teams overall success throughout the year!
170 lbs Asher Clark went 3 and 2, placed 4th and will represent Lakeside at State for his first and last time, as a Senior!
182 lbs Andrew King went 3 and 1, placed 3rd, and will wrestle for his first time at State, also a Senior.
220 lbs Tim Jarrad told me earlier in the year he was “gonna wrestle his heart out to make it to State”.  Timmy went 3 and 2, placed 4th, and fulfilled his commitment and will wrestle at State!
The finals were yet another anxiety monster that produced 2 first placers and 3 second placers.
Joe Adams placed 2nd.      Dalton Young placed 1st.
Hootie Judd placed 1st.      Klint Brown placed 2nd.
Garrett Brown placed 2nd.
Here is an interesting tidbit; 4 freshmen made it to State to represent Lakeside.  I’m not taking anything away from the other wrestlers, but the commitment that these athletes have at such a young age and their level of dedication to the sport of wrestling, is starting to pay dividends to the program.
Let us not forget the team’s female wrestler who also competed this weekend in Wahluke.  Akina Yamada battled her heart out for her team, for her family, and for herself with the hope of wrestling at State.  Akina placed 6th, and for her, the season is over.  Hold your chin up and be proud.  I know you may have felt alone on your journey, but your team has silently supported you along your personal endeavor.
Your team departs for State competition on Thursday the 20th at 0900 hours. There is a “send-off” assembly just prior to that at the high school gymnasium at 0730 hours.  All are welcome and everyone is invited and encouraged to attend.  Your team leaves with high expectations individually and as a team.  They will leave everything on the mat.  The four seniors we have going will leave it all on the mat while they cherish this week and their last account as they step onto the mats at the 26th Annual Mat Classic.
Go Lakeside, never give up!

Dam Days 2014 Gears Up For August

Nine Mile Falls is close to getting Dam Days back. 30 years ago the festival celebrated everything Nine Mile Falls and this year it looks to be a reality for revival on August 8th and 9th. The Dam Days committee, which is chaired by Stacey Calkins-Quimby,  has been meeting every Tuesday at the Tin Cup Country Cafe on Charles Road at 5pm. Quimby said "Volunteers are going to be needed for all aspects of the event so we need folks to come to the meetings". As more information becomes available we will do follow up posts. The committee has only met three times but has made some great progress towards getting the event off the ground. The event is sponsored by the Nine Mile Community Club.

You can get involved by asking to join the committee group on Facebook.

The Nine Mile Community Club also has a Facebook Page.

We are getting some great submissions for Nine Mile Falls WA News and Information. This one we could not even come close to passing up. The local Stevens County Fire and Rescue is putting on a fundraiser for an extremely noble cause. With no further adieu I will let Greg Nowak explain it in his own words.

"I just wanted to pass on some information about your local firefighters. We have a team of nine firefighters heading to Seattle on Mar 9th to participate in a fantastic fundraiser, The 23rd annual Scott Firefighter Stair climb for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. It is a timed race where 1800 firefighter from all over the world race up 69 flights of stairs in full turnouts and breathing with our air packs. Last year was a record event by raising over $1.4 million from this event alone. This year the goal is $2 million.
Our team will be having a fundraiser at the Suncrest PizzaFactory on Feb 23rd from noon to 6pm. The firefighters will be the cooks and servers. The prices are $10 for all you can eat pizza, breadstix and salad bar, 11-4 yr olds are $5, under 3 is free or a family ticket is $30."

Host An Exchange Student

If you would like the opportunity to host an exchanges student for the 2014-2015 school year, Northwest Services has plenty to choose from! I am a coordinator that lives here in Nine Mile Falls and have placed 13 kids in the area in the last 2 years! We have over 30 kids here in the Spokane area with our company and a great success rate with students and families. You can choose by boy or girl, country or activities you are interested in. Lakeside is a great school and the students have enjoyed their experiences here.

To host---you fill out an application online, have a background check and home interview.  The student comes with an monthly allowance, pays for their own school fees, sports, dances, hygiene supplies, phone (if they want one) and movies.  All you need to provide is a loving home, meals,  and a bed that is not a futon. They can share a room and ride in the car with host siblings as they are part of the family. Please contact me if you are interested in hosting, I have hosted 2 times now and it has been a great experience. Open your home and your heart to this wonderful opportunity!

Destination Imagination In Nine Mile Falls

If you have not heard of Destination Imagination (DI) please read on as it is an amazing program for our local students. Joy Murphy, a Kindergarten teacher at Lake Spokane Elementary, outlines the Nine Mile Falls participation in the program.

"Destination Imagination is a program for the creatively gifted student. The Nine Mile Falls School District has had teams involved in D.I. for the last 7 years. My daughter Katherine was on one of the first teams that our district supported. It was a team of 6th and 7th grades from Lakeside middle school. The team took second place at regionals and went on to the state tournament in Wenatchee.
It is an amazing program that encourages students to believe in themselves, think on their feet, take risks, and tackle challenges all while incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) as well as the arts or service learning projects. While coaching several teams I am always amazed at how 7 kids, often from different classrooms can come together and grow. They learn patience, persistence, flexibility, ethics and respect for others along the way.
Each year the DI program has six central challenges that a team can choose from; a technical, a scientific, a structural, a fine arts, an improvisational, and a service learning challenge. These team challenges are very involved and take several weeks to prepare for. Then there is an instant challenge while at the tournament. A team walks in the door and they never know what the challenge will be. It might be to build a tower in 3 minutes out of 21 pieces of paper as a team without talking. Tallest tower gets points. It might be to do a skit in which they get 4 minutes to prepare a skit in which one of the team members is disguised and create the disguise out of 4 pipe cleaners, 2 pieces of newspaper,  4 pieces of heavy paper, 6 mailing labels and 2 pieces of foil. They are given a box of markers and told to begin. They then create their disguise and then perform a two minute skit. No time to be shy, no time to second guess, they just jump in and do. I love how they come together and get the job done! The team receives points for revealing why a person is disguised, the creativity of the disguise, points for the creativity of the performance and more points for how well the team worked together.  As a coach, I can teach my team members how to use a sewing machine but I cannot touch their team costumes for their central challenge. If the team needs cardboard for a large back drop then they are the ones to look up phone numbers and ask at Home Depot. I can teach them how to use a glue gun or saw but I cannot cut lumber for them or touch their props. The teams are quite ingenious and duct tape is an absolute must! I've seen entire costumes held together with duct tape and staples. When teams showcase their solutions at the regional tournament level, the heartfelt pride in accomplishing something on their own it is truly amazing. That is the reason that we keep it going. From coach to district coordinator we are all behind our kids 100 percent."
We love DI!
District coordinator NMFSDJoy Murphy

Mission

To develop opportunities that inspire the global community of learners to utilize diverse approaches in applying 21st century skills and creativity.

The Destination Imagination program encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus and frame challenges while incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the arts and service learning. Our participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process. Teams may showcase their solutions at a tournament.

History

Destination Imagination (DI) is a non-profit, volunteer-led, cause-driven organization. Our purpose is to inspire and equip students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders.
Our organization was incorporated in 1982, when we took over the charter for OM Association, Inc. In 1999, our name was changed to Destination Imagination, Inc. Since then, our non-profit has impacted more than one million participants. Approximately 200,000 youth make friends and learn the creative process through our programs every year, and 38,000 volunteers support us!
All of our programs are Challenge-based, and they teach the creative process from imagination to innovation. Our goal is to help student teams learn to be creative in every aspect of their lives.
Our Challenge program is our most popular offering. At the start of the season, teams choose one of seven Challenges. After weeks spent creating, developing and practicing their solutions, they go to a local tournament. Top-scoring teams advance to state or country tournaments. The top level of the tournament is our Global Finals—the world’s largest celebration of creativity.
Our programs are developed annually to ensure they are relevant and align to National Education Standards, STEM standards, ELA Common Core Standards and Mathematics Common Core Standards. Every year, with the help of parent volunteers, educators, and subject matter experts, we design new and exciting Challenges for student teams to solve.

Rosauers In Suncrest? An Interview With President Jeff Philipps

The news hounds at Nine Mile Falls News and Information were able to track down the President of Rosauers. Mr. Philipps graciously took a minute out of his busy schedule to provide some answers about the possibility of Suncrest getting a Supermarket the caliber of Rosauers.

The rumor mills are swirling about the possible new Rosauers store to be located at the corner of Highway 291 and Swensen Road.

Jeff Philipps, President of the company stated that while the company is exploring the idea of a smaller format store for that site, there are several hurdles that must be cleared before the green light is given to the project.  Among the outstanding issues are the cost of construction and available financing.  “Either of those could be a stumbling block”, said Philipps.  “We anticipate having all of the necessary information to make a final decision toward the end of March”, he added.  Until that time, the company is hesitant to provide any additional details about the development.

“If the project becomes a reality, we think the residents of Suncrest and the surrounding area will be very pleased with what will be offered”, Philipps commented.

Rosauers is an employee owned organization and will provide modern growth for the Suncrest community.

A little history of Rosauers:

ROSAUERS SUPERMARKETS had its beginning in 1934 when J. Merton Rosauer, just out of school, bought a little grocery store on the corner of Sprague and Lee Streets in Spokane, Washington. The purchase was financed by a $1,000 loan from his father and mother. These were Depression times, and it was four years before the loan could be paid back out of profits.

It took courage and faith to launch a business at a time when America's economy was turned upside down, and over the years Mr. Rosauer would parlay these traits into one of the most successful and innovative corporations in the Pacific Northwest. In 1938 he sold his first neighborhood store, and with his earnings reinvested in another. A short time later he repeated that process again. Then in 1949, Mr. Rosauer opened the Company's first - and Spokane's first - supermarket. It was located at 3rd and Oak, and it incorporated lessons and ideas that had been 15 years in the making. At that time, Rosauers had only about 20 employees. But these dedicated people made the new supermarket an instant success. Interestingly, that first store is still operating, in a space seven times larger than its original size.

Since the first supermarket in 1949, Rosauers has expanded its operations to include conventional Supermarkets, Price Impact Super Stores, and Natural and Organic Markets serving the Inland Pacific Northwest in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.

In 1984, prior to retiring, Mert Rosauer sold the company to another Spokane-based business, URM Stores, Inc. By selling to his supplier, Mert felt that the traditions he established would endure at the stores he founded for many more years to come.

In September 1989, after just 5 years of ownership, the Board of Directors for URM Stores, Inc., made a decision to sell the Rosauers chain. On July 27, 1990, a dream came true for the 1,250 existing Rosauers employees of that time. They became the proud new owners of fifteen (15) food and drug stores operating in four states, one freestanding pharmacy, an ice cream plant and the corporate office building, through an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) transaction.

Since 1990, Rosauers has made several acquisitions to expand existing stores and add to the total number of stores in operation. These included Market Time Drug in Lewiston, Idaho, Drug Fair in Moscow, Idaho, Super 1 Foods in Spokane, the Monroe Street Market and Spokane Wine Company in Spokane, Super 1 Foods in Walla Walla, Washington, Super 1 Foods in Hermiston, Oregon (closed in May of 2008), Super 1 Foods in Colville, Washington, and Excel Food Stores in Colfax and Deer Park (closed in September of 2010), Washington. New stores have been built in Yakima, Washington and Bozeman, Montana.

In June of 2000, the employees, by unanimous vote, re-sold the company to URM Stores. Today, Rosauers Supermarkets Inc. consists of 16 Rosauers Food & Drug Stores, 4 Super 1 Foods Stores and 1 free-standing Huckleberry’s Natural Market. The company has approximately 2,100 employees.

Rosauers has continued to stand on its founding principles of providing the highest quality products, largest selection, cleanest stores and friendliest, professional service. Rosauers’ commitment to valuing its employees and customers will continue to guide the company toward a very successful future. Mert Rosauer would be proud of the legacy he founded so many years ago.

The Solvencia Award ("Soundness of Character") was created by the 2012/2013 Student School Board Representatives. It is a recognition program promoted by the NMFSD School Board and run by the School Board Representatives. Our goal is to recognize students in our community who are doing great things or overcoming great obstacles that one would not normally be recognized for, such as dramatic increases in academics, volunteer work in the local community, outstanding amounts of kindness being shown to others, etc. These are just a few of the many great things being done by our students who deserve recognition. Students nominated each month by classroom teachers will be selected and recognized at the monthly School Board Meetings.

The Resurrection Of Dam Days

There has been a growing movement to resurrect the Nine Mile Falls Dam Days from the 1980's. There is a private Facebook group dedicated to the project. They will be holding regular meetings at The Tin Cup Cafe and County Store starting this Thursday January 23, 2014 at 4 P.M. This sounds like a great idea and a fun way to celebrate everything Nine Mile! Take a look at this clip from the Spokane Chronicle dated August 6, 1987.

Steven's County Sheriff Reports

We are working with the Steven's county Sheriff's department to start bringing you the Steven's county Sheriff report for the Suncrest and surrounding area.
